Malham Moor, Malhamdale and Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales is a hilly area, the upland watershed from which rivers flow both east and west, carving out verdant valleys. The higher land is open moorland rising to distinctive peaks above 2000 feet and interspersed with lush green dales where charming villages nestle.

Malhamdale is one of the finest of these valleys, the upper reaches of the river aire. Ten miles of little roads take you from Gargrave to Malham, where the valley closes in and you rise up onto Malham Moor, where you find High Trenhouse, overlooking Malham Tarn. From there you can travel west into Ribblesdale or East to Wharfedale. To the north are the slopes of Fountains Fell, once summer grazing for the sheep ranges of Fountains Abbey.

The plateau around Malham Tarn, at 1300 feet above sea level, provides a secluded backwater. It is a haven of peace in a troubled world. Across the Tarn is the former country seat of Walter Morrison, now a field studies centre. The classic walk from High Trenhouse takes you via the dry valley to Malham Cove, Malham village, Janet’s Fosse, Gordale and back via the Tarn – one of the finest walk in the country! The local population density is about one person per square kilometre (and rather more sheep). Also this is an area where all of history is written on the landscape awaiting your interpretation.

Stay at High Trenhouse and enjoy being uniquely embedded in this wild and wonderful upland area. You don’t have to “go” anywhere because you are already there.
